Narrow AI is a system designed to perform a specific, bounded task, such as forecasting churn or parsing contracts. The majority of enterprise AI currently in production is narrow AI, though agentic systems are increasingly moving from pilot to production.
In practice
Narrow AI is where most of the realised return still sits, because a bounded task has a measurable baseline and a clear owner. When a vendor pitches a general capability, ask which specific task it will beat today's process at, and by how much.
