Artificial Intelligence (AI)
Also called: AI
Artificial intelligence is the branch of computer science dedicated to creating hardware and software systems capable of performing tasks that have historically required human intelligence. Those tasks include visual perception, speech recognition, understanding written language, reasoning about context, making decisions and continuing to learn from experience. The term spans decades-old statistical methods and today's foundation models alike.
In practice
Artificial intelligence is a category, not a product, so "we use AI" tells a buyer nothing about what a supplier actually does. Push past the label to the method, the training data and the failure mode. Classical machine learning and foundation models both sit inside the term, and their cost and risk profiles are not comparable.
