Vertical AI
FoundationsCore AI Concepts
Vertical AI is a system built for a specific industry from the ground up, embedding that industry's regulatory context, data structures and workflows rather than adapting a general-purpose model to fit them afterwards. A vertical product for clinical coding or insurance claims arrives already knowing the codes, the forms and the rules.
In practice
The trade-off for that specificity is flexibility: a vertical model is deliberately narrower in scope than the horizontal alternative it is built to outperform. Buy vertical where the domain rules are the hard part and horizontal where the work spans functions, and check that the vendor's depth is real rather than a general-purpose model behind a sector-branded interface.
