Natural language processing (NLP) is the field concerned with enabling computers to comprehend, interpret, evaluate and generate human languages. It draws on artificial intelligence, computer science and computational linguistics. NLP is what powers enterprise text analytics, document summarisation, automated sentiment analysis, machine translation and conversational voice interfaces.
In practice
NLP sits underneath text analytics, document processing and customer support bots, so it is rarely bought as a product in its own right. Treat it as a capability check on a supplier: if they cannot explain how their system copes with your documents' vocabulary, the demonstration ran on someone else's data.
