Data Governance

Working knowledgeGovernance, Safety and Ethics

Data governance is the management framework covering the availability, usability, integrity, privacy and security of an organisation's data assets. In artificial intelligence deployments it does specific work: making sure training datasets are legally sourced, properly consent-verified, protected against unauthorised access and compliant with regulations such as GDPR and CCPA throughout the model lifecycle.

In practice

Data governance is a core compliance pillar in legal due diligence and risk framework reviews. The question that catches targets out is provenance: can they show where each training dataset came from and on what basis it was used. A model trained on data the company had no right to use is a defect that transfers with the sale.
