Also called: Machine Vision

Computer vision is the field of artificial intelligence that enables software to acquire, process, analyse and comprehend visual information from digital images, video streams and sensor data. Businesses use it for automated quality inspection in manufacturing, spatial tracking in retail stores, navigation for autonomous vehicles and medical diagnostic scanning.

In practice

Computer vision is where AI most reliably produces a hard operational number: defects caught before shipment, shrinkage identified, inspection labour removed. It is also the application most sensitive to physical conditions, so a pilot that worked under good lighting may not survive the actual factory floor. Insist on a trial in the real environment before committing capital.
