Copilot
Also called: AI Copilot
A copilot is an AI assistant built into the tool someone already works in, drafting and suggesting while the person using it keeps control of what is accepted. It sits inside the editor, the spreadsheet or the case management system, and its output is a proposal the user accepts, edits or discards. The contrast is with an agent, which is given a goal and acts on it without pausing for approval at each step. Copilot describes a product pattern, not an architecture: the same model can power either.
In practice
A copilot is the lower-risk way into a regulated workflow, because a person approves every output and the approval is itself the audit trail. It also caps the return, since the saving comes from faster drafting rather than removed steps, so the business case rests on time per task.
