AI slop is the flood of low-quality, mass-produced content generated cheaply by AI and published with little or no human oversight, covering text, images and video. It was named a Word of the Year in 2025 by major dictionaries, reflecting how widely the public now recognises it and pushes back against it.
In practice
A 94% majority of American adults say they have encountered AI-generated content on social media, but fewer than half feel confident they can actually spot it. For a business publishing at volume, the reputational cost of being read as slop lands on the brand rather than the tool that produced it. Put a named human owner on anything that goes out under your name.
