Frontier Model

Working knowledgeCore AI Concepts

A frontier model is a state-of-the-art foundation model that approaches or surpasses the existing technical limits of reasoning, multi-step problem solving and multimodal comprehension. Because frontier models exhibit capabilities and emergent security risks beyond earlier releases, their development is subject to voluntary safety commitments, regulatory oversight and rigorous adversarial red-teaming before commercial deployment.

In practice

Frontier describes where a model sits against the current state of the art, not its fitness for your task, and the label moves as the field moves. Safety commitments at the frontier are voluntary rather than statutory, so a vendor's published policy is something to read and test, not something to assume.
