Prompt engineering is the practice of deliberately structuring the input given to an AI model. The prompt is that input: the instruction, question or context that shapes the response. Asking a model to "summarise this report" versus "summarise in three bullets for a non-technical board audience, focusing on financial risk" produces materially different outputs from identical content.

At enterprise scale, the quality of your prompt library compounds across every interaction, so treat prompts as a managed asset with named owners and version control rather than as text people retype. The gap between a team that does this and one that does not shows up as rework, never as a line in the AI budget.
